Cincy3 Weekend to Host Pan American Continental Championship on Nov 2nd, 2014 at Devou Park

Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2014 | How many American cyclocross fans have seen the European Continental Cyclocross Champion’s jersey on Helen Wyman and wondered – if there’s a Continental Championship race in Europe, why isn’t there a Continental Championships over here?  After next season that will no longer be a question – the first-ever Pan-American Continental Championships will be held in Covington, Kentucky’s Devou Park as the Sunday event of the November Cincy3 weekend!

The successful execution of last year’s World Cyclocross Championships in Louisville, KY, USA not only once and for all legitimized the American scene to the World, but showed the UCI how important the U.S. was to the overall growth of the sport worldwide.  The growth of the sport in the U.S. has no parallel currently in any other country on the planet, so the fact that only 2 countries actively participate in the sport in North and South America did not dissuade the UCI from approving the proposal of the organizing committee from Cincinnati.  Invitations will go out to all Pan-Am Confederation member countries, and assistance may be provided to developing countries on housing and possibly equipment.

Now in its 11th year, the Cincy3 Cyclocross Festival is one of 4 UCI Class 1 cyclocross weekends next year in the extremely strong Midwest region.  What began as a one-day UCI event at Fairfield’s Harbin Park with 100 total riders – the weekend has now grown from 1 to 3 days, with a max rider count at over 600 racers in a day.  It features 3 distinct and popular venues for racing.  Kingswood Park (formerly golf course) is Saturday’s Class 1 venue, possibly best known for hosting the World Championships “warm-up” race last January won by Niels Albert and Katerina Nash.   Kingswood also serves as the practice home of Cincinnati’s “Lionhearts” junior race team.  Covington, Kentucky’s Devou Park, with its stunning views of downtown Cincinnati and massive 700 acres, serves as a grand locale for such a significant event as the first-ever Continental Championship.

Between the Harbin Park Class 2 event on Friday, the Kings Class 1 night race on Saturday, and Sunday’s Continental Championships at Devou Park – more than twice as many UCI points will go out in Cincinnati than in any other weekend on next year’s U.S. ProCX calendar!  One noteworthy fact is that the Continental Championships is not for elite men; only for elite women, U23 and Junior 17-18 men.  Cincy promoters have worked through this by requesting a Class 2 men’s event to add to the Continental Championships schedule on Sunday.   Additionally, a women’s junior U23 category was added to the European Championships last year for the first time, and the organizers in Cincy plan on running that category in the Pan-American event as well.
